Memphis, Tennessee – A refreshing break from early summer heat will arrive across the Mid-South this week, but it will be short-lived as temperatures quickly rebound toward 90 degrees by Thursday and Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, cooler air filtering into the region behind a cold front will hold afternoon highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s Monday and Tuesday. The cooler stretch will provide temporary relief across western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, eastern Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel.

Memphis is expected to reach 80 degrees Monday before warming to 85 degrees Tuesday, 90 degrees Wednesday and 89 degrees Thursday. Similar trends are expected across much of the region, including Jackson, Tennessee; Jonesboro, Arkansas; Oxford, Mississippi; and Kennett, Missouri.

Across Tennessee – Mississippi, temperatures will remain several degrees below recent highs to start the workweek. Jackson is forecast to reach 78 degrees Monday before climbing to 84 Tuesday and 87 Wednesday. Oxford is expected to warm from 78 degrees Monday to 87 degrees by Wednesday and 90 degrees Thursday.

In Arkansas – Missouri, Jonesboro is forecast to rise from 79 degrees Monday to 89 degrees Wednesday, while Kennett could reach 89 degrees by Wednesday and 87 degrees Thursday. Tupelo, Mississippi, is expected to warm from 80 degrees Monday to 88 degrees Wednesday and 93 degrees Friday.

The warming trend will become more noticeable beginning Wednesday as stronger June sunshine and southerly winds return across the Mid-South. Afternoon temperatures in many communities are forecast to reach the upper 80s and lower 90s through the end of the week.

Residents should take advantage of the cooler conditions early in the week before summer heat returns. Hydration, frequent breaks outdoors and limiting strenuous afternoon activities will become increasingly important by late week as temperatures climb.

Additional forecast updates will refine how long the returning heat persists into next weekend.
