Memphis, Tenn. – Triple-digit heat indices may stay just out of reach, but the Mid-South is locked into a stretch of unrelenting heat with daily highs climbing into the mid to upper 90s through next week. Memphis is forecast to hit 97 degrees multiple days, making outdoor activity dangerous during peak afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, hot and dry conditions will dominate across Tennessee, northern Mississippi, eastern Arkansas, and the Missouri Bootheel through Friday. While humidity is expected to remain low enough to keep heat indices under 100, the actual air temperatures will still push near record highs for mid-September.

Cities such as Jackson, Dyersburg, and Jonesboro are all projected to reach 97 or 98 degrees, while Oxford and Savannah should see highs in the lower 90s. Overnight lows will remain uncomfortably warm, hovering in the mid-70s, offering little relief from daytime heat.

Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors who may be more vulnerable in the prolonged heat.

The heat pattern shows no signs of breaking until late next week, with more advisories possible if humidity levels climb.
