Memphis, TN – Tennessee officials have extended a flood warning for the Mississippi River at Memphis, where rising waters pose ongoing threats to public safety through 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, floodwaters reached 37.1 feet late Monday and are expected to crest at 37.3 feet early Wednesday morning. The danger zone includes Memphis and nearby West Memphis, Arkansas, where grain terminals and businesses south of the city are already submerged. Motorists are advised to avoid low-lying roads, especially near the I-55 corridor, where water levels may compromise access routes.

Riverbank areas are especially hazardous this week. Pedestrians should steer clear of walkways near the Mississippi, particularly near the fuel facility just south of the river gauge site in Memphis, which is currently flooded.

Spring weather conditions beyond the flood event are expected to remain mostly calm. Wednesday brings sunny skies and a high of 73°F. Wednesday night will be partly cloudy with lows around 54°F. Thursday turns mostly sunny with warmer temperatures near 80°F, though gusty winds may reach up to 25 mph.
