Memphis, Tenn. – Thunderstorms will likely move into Memphis by early Tuesday afternoon, bringing intense rain and sultry heat just in time for the afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances rise after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with thunderstorms likely between 4 and 7 p.m. South winds will push humid Gulf air into the region, sending heat index values soaring to 103°F. Downpours could lead to pooling on roads like I-240 and I-55, creating hazards during peak drive times.

Localized flooding and lightning are possible in Shelby County and surrounding areas. Residents should avoid travel during heavy rain bands and secure outdoor items. Light winds will shift from the south and west, with rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch — higher totals possible in storm cells.

The active weather pattern continues through midweek. Wednesday brings a 70% chance of more showers and storms, especially between 1 and 4 p.m. Thursday also features strong storm chances, with partly sunny skies and highs near 89°F. Rain tapers slightly into Friday and Saturday.
