Gatlinburg, TN – A powerful early winter storm is blanketing the Great Smoky Mountains region, prompting a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
The warning includes Sevier, Blount, Cocke, Greene, and Unicoi counties, with snow already impacting high-elevation areas such as Mount LeConte, Newfound Gap, and Cades Cove. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected in most areas, with up to 15 inches possible along the highest ridges.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds up to 40 mph will reduce visibility and make travel extremely difficult, especially on U.S. 441 (Newfound Gap Road) and mountain parkways connecting Gatlinburg to North Carolina. Both Monday morning and evening commutes may be affected by slick and snow-covered roads in surrounding foothill communities, including Erwin, Hartford, and Cedar Creek.
The National Park Service advises travelers to check road closures before visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as heavy snow and ice could shut down mountain passes and trails.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages due to heavy, wet snow on trees and power lines.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Monday night, though icy spots and lingering snow showers could persist into early Tuesday.
