Tennessee – Headlights blur in a low gray haze as freezing fog clings to roadways and sidewalks across the Mid-South. Thin ice coats bridges and untreated streets, nearly invisible but dangerously slick. The cold feels stubborn, and travel conditions remain risky as winter refuses to loosen its grip.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Special Weather Statement remains in effect due to hazardous travel from freezing fog, ice, and refreezing slush. Temperatures near 29 degrees allow moisture to freeze on contact. Secondary roads remain especially dangerous, and black ice is difficult to spot before it’s too late.

In Memphis, patchy freezing fog lingers through the morning hours, with visibility dropping quickly at times. Drivers along I-40, I-55, and surface streets should slow down and increase following distance. Even treated roads can refreeze after brief melting during daylight.

By Friday, skies turn partly sunny, but cold air dominates. Highs struggle to reach the lower 30s, and north winds add bite. Any slush melts briefly, then refreezes after sunset. Friday night temperatures fall into the mid-teens, locking ice in place and increasing the risk of frozen pipes.

Saturday brings sunshine but little relief. Highs stay near the lower 20s, keeping shaded roads slick. Conditions improve slowly Sunday as highs climb near freezing, though icy patches persist early. By Monday, milder air pushes in, helping clear remaining ice.

Plan extra time if traveling, avoid sudden braking, and check on neighbors who may need help staying warm. Are roads slick where you are this morning? Let others know what you’re seeing.
