Tennessee starts the morning under a low gray ceiling as light showers edge toward Memphis and the Mississippi River. The air feels mild for February, but steadier rain and thunderstorms are lining up for later today into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, showers become likely after mid-afternoon with highs near 65 degrees. Rain chances increase to 80% today, then climb to 100% tonight as thunderstorms develop. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible through Sunday afternoon. Southeast winds strengthen to 10 mph, and gusts could reach 25 mph before shifting north Sunday.

Drivers along I-40, I-55 and Highway 78 should expect ponding water and sudden drops in visibility during heavier downpours. A few storms may produce gusty winds and frequent lightning. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset as the heaviest cells track across Shelby County. Charge devices and review safety plans now.

Rain continues into Sunday morning, with highs near 58 before drier air moves in. Skies clear Sunday night, and Washington’s Birthday turns mostly sunny with a high near 63. Monday night dips to 49, but no winter cold snap follows. Instead, temperatures rebound to 69 Tuesday and into the low 70s by midweek.

That warming trend places Memphis 10 to 20 degrees above average through much of President’s Day week. Spring vibes are building across West Tennessee, even as periodic rain chances return late week.
