Nashville, TN – Thunderstorms are expected to intensify across Middle Tennessee this afternoon, bringing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and possible travel delays along I-40 and major roads in Nashville.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread after 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, with some storms producing wind gusts as high as 25 mph and rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch. South winds will persist at 10 to 15 mph, making outdoor activities and travel potentially hazardous through the evening.

A 90% chance of precipitation remains in place through Tuesday night, with the strongest storms likely before 7 p.m. Motorists should prepare for reduced visibility and wet pavement during rush hour, particularly on I-40 and I-65. If you’re heading out, give yourself extra time and avoid driving through flooded intersections.

Wednesday, May 21, brings a sharp change: sunny skies return with a high near 80°F and calm winds. It marks a brief but welcome early summer warm-up, ahead of another round of possible showers later in the week.

Looking ahead, Thursday through Memorial Day sees a mix of sun and slight chances of rain:

  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high 74°F.
  • Friday: Sunny, high 72°F.
  • Saturday: Slight chance of rain, high 75°F.
  • Sunday: Showers possible, high 75°F.
  • Memorial Day: 50% chance of storms, high near 81°F.
