Mountain City, Tennessee – Drivers across the higher terrain of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia are facing slick roads and dangerous travel conditions this morning as snow and gusty winds linger into the late morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday for Johnson, Unicoi, and portions of Greene, Carter, and Monroe counties in Tennessee, as well as Wise and Russell counties in southwest Virginia. Additional snowfall up to one inch is expected, but strong winds gusting to 40 mph are creating blowing snow and icy conditions on exposed roads.

The most hazardous travel is occurring along mountain routes including U.S. 421 through Shady Valley, U.S. 19E near Hampton, and U.S. 23 and U.S. 58 across Wise and Russell counties. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches are especially slick, increasing the risk of spin-outs during the Thursday morning commute.

Cold air is adding another layer of concern, particularly at higher elevations where early morning temperatures are dangerously low. Prolonged exposure could lead to cold-related illness, and pedestrians should use caution on icy sidewalks and steps.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check 511 road conditions before traveling. Snow showers and gusty winds are expected to taper late this morning, but lingering slick spots may persist into midday, especially in higher elevations. The advisory remains in effect until late morning, with additional updates possible if conditions change.
