Memphis, TN – Severe drought conditions are worsening across the Mid-South, with very little rain in the forecast to provide relief this week. According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Memphis, Severe Drought (D2) has spread further across Tennessee, Arkansas, and northern Mississippi, leaving much of the region under worsening dry conditions.

The U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday, September 11, shows widespread expansion of drought categories, with multiple counties now classified under Severe Drought. Officials said that hot, dry conditions are expected to continue through next week, with less than one inch of rainfall forecast for the next seven days.

“This prolonged lack of rainfall has worsened drought impacts across agriculture, water resources, and local communities,” the Weather Service reported. Farmers and residents are being advised to monitor conditions closely, as worsening drought could strain crop yields and increase wildfire risks.

Drought.gov reports that impacts can be far-reaching, affecting drinking water supplies, soil conditions, and livestock. With no significant rain expected in the immediate forecast, conditions may deteriorate further as September progresses.

Residents across Memphis, Shelby County, and surrounding Mid-South communities are encouraged to conserve water and remain alert to local advisories.
