Memphis, TN – Storm-weary residents in West Tennessee should brace for another wet afternoon Sunday, as thunderstorms could bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Memphis and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service, Sunday’s storm window opens between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms continuing through early evening. Rainfall totals may exceed one inch in some locations, with brief periods of lightning and strong wind gusts near 25 mph. Northeast winds will shift southeast by the evening, possibly intensifying isolated downpours.
Localized flooding could affect low-lying roads, including stretches of I-40 and I-240. Motorists should slow down on wet pavement and allow extra travel time. Use caution when driving during heavy rain, and avoid underpasses or flooded intersections.
Showers taper Sunday night, but Monday brings more wet weather. Another round of thunderstorms is likely between noon and 4 p.m., with up to 0.25 inch of rain. Evening conditions should dry briefly before more isolated storms move through Monday night.
Tuesday offers a break with sunny skies and a high near 80°F. Spring warmth continues into midweek, with mostly clear skies Tuesday night and a sunny high near 87°F Wednesday. A 20% chance of storms returns by Thursday afternoon.
