Memphis, Tenn. – Drivers and families across western Tennessee should brace for a dangerous mix of late-summer heat and stormy weather this week. Friday’s high is expected to push near 98°F in Memphis before thunderstorms arrive by evening, potentially disrupting commutes and outdoor plans heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday will bring sunshine and calmer winds with highs near 91°F. But by Friday night, a strong chance of thunderstorms could lead to slick conditions along I-40 and other Memphis roadways. Rain chances remain elevated into Saturday with scattered storms before clearing skies Sunday bring a much cooler and more comfortable end to the weekend.
The heat remains the most pressing concern. Officials advise limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours Friday. Hydration and shade breaks are essential, particularly for outdoor workers and athletes. Those traveling on Tennessee highways, including I-40, should monitor for heavy downpours Friday evening that may reduce visibility and create hydroplaning risks.
Saturday’s storms could also affect weekend events, including youth sports and outdoor festivals across Shelby County. By Sunday, temperatures drop significantly with highs only near 80°F, giving the Mid-South its first taste of fall.
More rain returns early next week, but widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.
