Morristown, TN – A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to impact parts of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia through early Monday, with snowfall accumulations reaching up to 2 inches in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown, areas above 3,500 feet, including parts of the Smoky Mountains and northern Plateau, will see the most significant snow. Most lower elevations will experience a mix of rain and snow, with accumulations generally less than an inch.
Light snow may create hazardous road conditions, especially on secondary roads, bridges, overpasses, and in higher elevations. Residents are advised to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time.
Southwest Virginia, including Lee and Wise counties, may also see light snow, with totals nearing 2 inches in select high-altitude areas. Areas like Johnson City, Greeneville, and Gatlinburg are advised to monitor road conditions closely.
Snowfall in the Smoky Mountains could reach up to 3 inches in areas such as Newfound Gap and Mt. LeConte, the NWS reports. Precipitation is expected to taper off by mid-morning Monday.
Drivers are encouraged to stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and local news outlets for updates. Officials recommend reducing speeds and watching for slick spots on untreated surfaces.
