Memphis, TN – A multi-day flood threat looms for West Tennessee as a Flash Flood Watch goes into effect starting Wednesday afternoon and continues through Sunday morning, with Memphis and surrounding areas expected to receive significant rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the Mid-South region could see “generational” rainfall totals, with areas along and north of Interstate 40 forecast to receive upwards of 10 inches between Wednesday and Saturday. This excessive rain is expected to cause widespread river, flash, and areal flooding across West Tennessee, East Arkansas, and North Mississippi.

Counties under the watch include Shelby, Fayette, Madison, Tipton, Obion, and Weakley, among others. Major cities like Jackson, Dyersburg, and Martin are also at risk. Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to prepare for rapidly rising creeks, overflowing rivers, and urban street flooding.

The heaviest rainfall is expected late Wednesday into Friday, with multiple rounds of storms contributing to saturated ground and reduced runoff capacity.

Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing water. Officials recommend securing outdoor property, checking sump pumps, and staying updated through emergency alerts.
