Memphis, Tenn. – Scorching heat returns Monday as Memphis braces for dangerous conditions with a heat index climbing toward 107°F by afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch in effect from 12 p.m. Monday, July 28, through 8 p.m. Tuesday, warning of heat-related illnesses without proper precautions.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, high temperatures will approach 97°F Monday, with a 20% chance of afternoon thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Winds will remain calm before shifting slightly from the southwest around 5 mph. Heat index values could push toward triple digits by midday, making outdoor activity risky — especially for those traveling along Interstate 40 and other unshaded roadways.

Residents are urged to limit time outside, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon. Vulnerable populations, especially seniors and children, should seek air-conditioned spaces and check in with neighbors. Outdoor workers are encouraged to schedule frequent breaks and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion.

While Monday night will offer mild relief with lows around 79°F, Tuesday continues the summer surge with highs near 99°F and another round of isolated storms possible by afternoon.
