Tennessee – Cold rain taps rooftops early this morning while gray clouds hang low over Middle Tennessee. That mild, damp feel will not last. By the weekend, winter surges back with snow, sleet, and ice that could turn roads slick and knock out power across the Nashville area.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon for much of Middle Tennessee, including the Nashville metro. According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, heavy snow and ice are possible, with snow totals exceeding 6 inches in some areas and ice accumulations topping one-half inch.

Temperatures cool steadily as colder air presses south. Snow chances increase late Friday night, then intensify Saturday. Areas north of Interstate 40 are favored for heavier snow, while locations south of I-40 face a higher risk of ice. That setup raises concern for downed trees, power outages, and extremely hazardous travel.

Saturday looks active and messy. Snow mixes with sleet during the day, then transitions to a wintry mix Saturday night. Roads that appear wet during daylight hours may flash freeze after sunset. Bridges, ramps, and untreated neighborhood streets could become treacherous fast.

Sunday remains unsettled, with snow likely lingering into the afternoon. Travel may be difficult or even impossible at times, especially during heavier bursts. Residents should prepare now by securing supplies, charging devices, and avoiding unnecessary travel once precipitation begins.

Beyond the weekend storm, colder-than-normal air lingers into early next week. National outlooks point to an active winter pattern across the central and eastern U.S., keeping additional weather alerts possible.
