Memphis, Tennessee – Extreme heat continues to grip the Mid-South as Memphis braces for another scorcher on Wednesday, July 30, with a heat index up to 115°F expected by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday, affecting Shelby County, Fayette County, and surrounding areas across West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and East Arkansas. Temperatures will soar to 98°F Wednesday, but humidity will make it feel much hotter. Peak danger for heat-related illness will occur between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid travel on I-40 and I-240 during peak heat hours, and check on elderly neighbors. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and limit physical activity outside.
By Thursday, highs will again near 96°F, but rain chances increase slightly in the afternoon. Storms may bring brief relief and gusty winds, though dangerous heat will persist through early evening.
