Morristown, Tenn. – Dense fog is blanketing roads across East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia this morning, creating dangerous driving conditions with visibility down to just a quarter-mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EDT Friday for a wide area stretching from Scott County, Tennessee to Washington County, Virginia. Key impacted locations include Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, LaFollette, and Big Stone Gap.
Drivers should expect limited visibility on routes like US-11W, I-81, and local mountain roads. The fog, formed under calm winds and overnight cooling, will gradually lift through mid-morning. Until then, officials urge drivers to use low beams, reduce speed, and leave extra following distance.
Communities near Norris Lake, South Holston Dam, and Big South Fork National River are particularly prone to patchy fog through dawn. School buses and early commuters in Union, Hawkins, and Carter counties should take extra caution.
The fog is expected to dissipate by late morning as temperatures rise. However, another advisory may be issued tonight if calm, moist conditions persist.
