Morristown, TN – The National Weather Service in Morristown has issued and expanded Winter Weather Advisories across much of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia through Tuesday morning, warning of snow showers, squalls, and slippery travel conditions across the region.
According to forecasters, light to moderate snow will develop Monday afternoon and evening, affecting counties including Knox, Blount, Sevier, Claiborne, Carter, Monroe, Unicoi, and Greene in Tennessee, and Lee, Wise, Russell, and Washington Counties in Virginia.
Most lower elevations are expected to see less than an inch, while ridges and peaks could see 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher totals possible in mountain zones. The NWS warns that brief snow squalls could cause sudden drops in visibility and quickly slick roadways, especially along Interstate 40, I-75, and I-81.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution, particularly during the Monday evening commute. For travelers in higher terrain, conditions could worsen rapidly with falling temperatures and gusty winds.
The advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Monday for lower elevations and until 7 a.m. Tuesday for higher elevations and border counties. Motorists can check Tennessee road conditions by dialing 511 before traveling.
