Huntsville, Ala. – Drivers across North Alabama are waking up to dangerous travel conditions as dense fog settles over the Tennessee Valley early Monday. Visibility in some areas has dropped to a quarter-mile or less, especially in low-lying valleys, near rivers, and in places that picked up rainfall Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, patchy fog developed overnight and will remain in place through the morning commute. The fog is expected to be most persistent in sheltered valleys and near bodies of water, where cooler air traps lingering moisture.

Travelers on Interstate 65, U.S. 72, and other major roadways could face sudden drops in visibility, making for hazardous driving conditions. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, allow extra distance between vehicles, and use low-beam headlights rather than high beams, which can reflect off the fog and worsen visibility.

The dense fog should gradually lift by late morning as temperatures rise, but officials warn that similar conditions may return in the coming days if overnight cooling meets moist ground.

Warnings remain in effect through early Monday, and further advisories are possible if fog redevelops overnight.
