Huntsville, Ala. – Drivers across the Tennessee Valley are waking up to dangerous fog this morning, with visibility dropping to a quarter-mile or less in some areas through 9 a.m. CDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville and Nashville, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for all of northern Alabama and much of middle Tennessee. Cities including Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, Nashville, Columbia, and Cookeville are under the advisory, which began just before 4 a.m. Thursday.

Travelers along I-65, I-24, and U.S. 72 should expect sudden drops in visibility and slow-moving traffic during the morning commute. Local law enforcement is urging drivers to use headlights, reduce speed, and leave extra distance between vehicles.

The thick fog is a result of light winds and high humidity overnight, common during summer mornings in the region. This is the seventh Dense Fog Advisory issued by the Huntsville office so far this year.

Conditions should gradually improve after 9 a.m., but additional advisories may be issued if visibility doesn’t improve as expected. Motorists are advised to check local road conditions and allow extra time for travel.
