HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Drivers across North Alabama are waking up to hazardous travel conditions Wednesday as dense fog settles over much of the Tennessee Valley. Visibility is reduced to less than a mile in some areas, creating dangerous conditions for commuters before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, widespread patchy fog will persist through the predawn hours with visibility generally between 2 and 4 miles, though isolated spots could drop below 1 mile. Improvement is not expected until after daybreak.
The heaviest fog is being reported along portions of I-65 near Decatur, U.S. 72 west of Huntsville, and rural roads in Jackson and Marshall counties. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, allow extra time for travel, and keep a greater distance from other vehicles. Low-beam headlights are recommended when driving in fog.
Air travel may also be affected, with potential delays for early morning flights out of Huntsville International Airport due to reduced runway visibility.
Conditions are expected to clear gradually after sunrise, but another round of fog could return overnight into Thursday morning.
