Knoxville, TN — A line of severe thunderstorms pushing through eastern Tennessee has prompted a tornado watch across the region early Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the tornado watch is in effect until 8 a.m. EDT and includes areas from Knoxville to Chattanooga. The primary threats include the potential for a couple of tornadoes, scattered wind gusts up to 70 mph, and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
The storm system, moving eastward at approximately 35 mph, is expected to pass through the region during the pre-dawn hours. Officials advise residents in the watch area to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight.
The tornado watch zone extends 35 miles east and west of a line from 55 miles northeast of Knoxville to 10 miles southwest of Chattanooga, placing several counties on high alert. Flights may be impacted, and power outages are possible due to falling trees and high winds.
Preparedness tips include charging mobile devices, reviewing shelter plans, and avoiding travel unless necessary. Tornado watches mean conditions are favorable for severe weather — residents should be ready to take immediate action if warnings are issued.
