Knoxville, Tennessee – Intense thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, and hail as large as tennis balls are moving across parts of Tennessee and neighboring states tonight under Tornado Watch 308, in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, supercell storms are sweeping east across eastern Tennessee, northern Georgia, eastern Kentucky, and parts of southwest North Carolina and Virginia. A few strong tornadoes and isolated hail events up to 2.5 inches in diameter are possible, especially with long-lived supercells developing ahead of a larger storm line.

Cities at elevated risk include Knoxville, Chattanooga, Lexington, and Rome. Wind damage and power outages are likely as storms consolidate into a broader squall line. Residents should stay in safe shelter, charge devices, and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Local emergency management urges residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during overnight hours when storms may strike while people are asleep.

The Tornado Watch remains active through 2 a.m. and may be extended or replaced by warnings as storms evolve. Stay alert for updates from the National Weather Service.
