Memphis, Tenn. – Storms could interrupt Sunday plans across Memphis as heat and humidity drive a risk of afternoon thunderstorms and heat indexes approaching triple digits.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a 20% chance of thunderstorms will develop after 1 p.m. Sunday, July 20, with a high near 95°F. South winds around 10 mph will worsen the muggy feel, pushing heat index values as high as 100°F in parts of Shelby County. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 9 p.m. Saturday, but Sunday’s conditions continue to raise health concerns. Limit outdoor activity during peak heat, especially along exposed roadways like I-240 and U.S. Highway 78.
Sunday night will be mostly clear with lows near 77°F, but the intense heat returns Monday. Highs will push toward 97°F and remain elevated through at least Thursday, July 25, as Memphis enters its hottest stretch of the summer so far. The extended period of sunshine and dry air may also strain air conditioning systems and lead to possible ozone alerts.
Stay weather-aware and hydrated, and check in on elderly neighbors or those without access to cooling.
