Putnam County, TN – A bonfire gathering in Putnam County ended in tragedy Thursday night after an argument escalated into a fatal shooting, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were called to McClain Road around 8:40 p.m. on September 10, where Nicholas Rittenberry had been shot in the stomach. He was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center but later died from his injuries.
According to the sheriff’s office, friends had gathered when an argument broke out over the whereabouts of a firearm. The dispute ended with Jordan Carper, a resident of the McClain Road home, allegedly shooting Rittenberry.
Putnam County investigators, alongside the District Attorney’s Office, are reviewing the case. Sheriff Eddie Farris said it is still early in the investigation but that evidence suggests the incident may have been self-defense.
“It is early in the investigation and investigators are still interviewing individuals who may have knowledge of the incident,” Sheriff Farris said. “After all the evidence is gathered and compiled, we will sit down with the District Attorney’s Office and will determine what or if there is any criminal charges that need to be filed.”
As of Thursday night, no arrests had been made. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Lt. Adrienne McCurry at (931) 528-8484.
