Memphis, Tenn. – Strong storms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across Tennessee Friday evening, with the most dangerous weather expected between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday. Gusty winds and hail are the primary hazards, especially near the Tennessee River.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms covers areas east of Memphis into western Middle Tennessee, while much of the rest of the Midsouth sits under a Marginal Risk (1 out of 5). The storm system will track west to east, peaking in intensity during the evening hours.

Memphis, Jackson, and communities along I-40 may see damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. Nashville sits on the edge of the stronger risk zone, with storms arriving later in the evening. A few severe cells could linger past midnight, making late-night driving potentially hazardous.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices in case of outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm threat.

The severe weather threat will diminish after 3 a.m. Saturday, though scattered showers could linger into the morning. Additional alerts may be issued if storms strengthen faster than expected.
