Knoxville, TN – A new phone scam is circulating across Tennessee, with callers falsely claiming that a loved one has been jailed and can be released if money is sent for an ankle monitor.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the scammers are pressuring residents to send payments through apps such as Venmo, PayPal, or similar online platforms. Officials stressed that this is a fraudulent scheme and that law enforcement agencies will never request money through these methods for bail, ankle monitors, or any other legal process.
Authorities urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately, contact the family member in question directly, and report the scam to law enforcement.
“These scams prey on fear and urgency,” the sheriff’s office warned in a public notice Friday. “Do not send money online if someone claims your loved one is in jail. Instead, verify their safety and alert authorities.”
The sheriff’s office emphasized that staying vigilant and spreading awareness are the best defenses against fraud. Officials are asking residents to share the warning widely with friends, neighbors, and older relatives who may be particularly vulnerable.
Knox County, home to Knoxville, has seen an increase in scam attempts in recent years, mirroring similar reports across Tennessee. Residents are encouraged to remain cautious of any unexpected requests for money over the phone.
Stay alert. Protect your family. Report suspicious calls immediately.
