Nashville, TN – Drivers across Tennessee are being urged to slow down and stay alert this week as the state recognizes National School Bus Safety Week, observed October 20–24, 2025, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the NHTSA, the campaign highlights the importance of protecting children near school buses, particularly in what’s known as the “Danger Zone” — areas around a school bus where the driver may not be able to see a child. Officials note that these blind spots are the most dangerous places for students during pickup and drop-off times.

These “Danger Zones” include:

  • 10 feet in front of the bus, where the driver may be seated too high to see a child.
  • 10 feet on either side, where a child may enter the driver’s blind spot.
  • Directly behind the bus, where visibility is limited.

THP and NHTSA encourage all motorists to remain vigilant in school zones, obey bus stop arms and flashing red lights, and allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon school hours.
