Selmer, TN – A Selmer Police Department officer was fatally shot Saturday during a violent altercation with a suspect.
The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the 100 block of New Bethel Road. Officers responded to reports of a suspicious man attempting to break into a home and firing several shots. The suspect fled on foot before authorities arrived.
According to Selmer Police, Officer Rick Finley, who also served with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, located the suspect in a nearby driveway. The man physically attacked Officer Finley, then shot him multiple times.
Selmer Police Lieutenant Ron Pilkington arrived soon after, returning fire and fatally striking the suspect.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case, while local authorities mourn Officer Finley’s death. The 25th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is also involved.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Finley’s family, friends, and departments,” said Colonel Matt Perry of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
