Tennessee wakes to a sharp chill and damp air that clings to roads and bare trees. What begins quietly will not stay that way. Ice continues to build across the region, and conditions are becoming increasingly dangerous by the hour.

A widespread Ice Storm Warning remains in effect across north Mississippi and west Tennessee, including Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth, Senatobia, Holly Springs, and extending north into western Tennessee communities such as Savannah, Selmer, and Henderson. According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, ice accumulations between one-half and one inch are expected, along with snow and sleet totals of 1 to 2 inches. The warning continues through Sunday evening.

Once ice thickens, impacts escalate quickly. Roads glaze over, especially bridges and elevated surfaces, and even short trips become risky. Travel may become impossible at times as ice coats pavement and visibility drops. Drivers along Highway 78, Highway 72, and I-22 should expect rapidly deteriorating conditions as precipitation continues.

Power outages are a major concern. Ice-laden trees and lines are likely to fail under the weight, and outages could last well beyond the end of the storm. To be fair, some areas may see brief breaks in precipitation, but refreezing will worsen conditions again after dark, increasing the risk of flash freezing.

Emergency officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only and prepare for extended disruptions. Charge phones and backup batteries now, gather essential supplies, and check on neighbors who may need help. Avoid using generators or grills indoors, and stay clear of downed power lines.

The storm slowly eases late Sunday, but hazardous travel and cleanup issues may linger into early next week as temperatures recover.
