Memphis, Tenn. – A soggy start to Memorial Day weekend is on the way for much of Tennessee, with rain totals topping two inches and growing concerns about flash flooding along the I-40 corridor through Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, rain chances will increase sharply after 11 p.m. Friday, with the heaviest precipitation expected north of I-40. Localized flooding is possible where showers repeatedly track over the same areas, a pattern forecasters say could persist into early next week. The probability of more than 2 inches of rain by Tuesday morning has already reached 60% for Memphis and Jackson, with surrounding areas seeing similar or higher chances.

In Memphis, overnight storms may also bring damaging winds and large hail, especially in counties west of the Mississippi River, where a Marginal Risk (1/5) has been issued for isolated severe storms. Travelers headed toward West Memphis, Jonesboro, or Searcy should prepare for rapidly changing conditions and avoid flooded roads.

Residents are urged to monitor alerts, keep devices charged, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.

Rain and storm threats are expected to linger through the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if flooding conditions worsen.
