Memphis, Tenn. – Floodwaters from the Mississippi River are rising fast in the Memphis area, threatening riverfront businesses and triggering warnings across Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi through late Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a flood warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday as river levels reached 36.9 feet by midday Monday. Flooding begins when the river surpasses 34 feet. At 37.0 feet, the grain terminal and nearby facilities south of West Memphis, Arkansas, are being inundated, and a fuel facility on the Memphis side is also impacted.
Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads and not bypass barricades. Pedestrians should be cautious near riverbanks, as swift currents and unstable ground pose risks.
The region’s weather remains mostly dry through Wednesday, but scattered thunderstorms are expected Thursday into Friday, potentially increasing runoff. Residents in low-lying areas and near the riverfront should prepare for continued water level changes and monitor local updates.
The Mississippi River is forecast to drop below flood stage by Friday, but until then, flood impacts will persist on both sides of the river. More statements will be issued as needed.
