Knoxville, TN – Fire danger remains high across East Tennessee and parts of western North Carolina as a Red Flag Warning stays in effect through 9 p.m. EDT Sunday. The alert covers the Smoky Mountains, surrounding foothills, and Cherokee and Clay counties in North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, TN, dry air and strong winds are creating critical fire weather conditions. Westerly winds reached up to 30 mph Saturday, and by Sunday afternoon, southerly gusts could exceed 45 mph.

Humidity levels are expected to remain low, ranging from the teens to lower 30s. Combined with dry vegetation and rising temperatures, these conditions significantly increase the risk of fast-moving wildfires. Fire officials strongly advise against outdoor burning during the warning period.

The affected areas include Johnson, Unicoi, and Polk counties in Tennessee, as well as key Smoky Mountain zones in Blount, Sevier, and Monroe counties. The region’s mountainous terrain often amplifies wind gusts and complicates fire suppression efforts.

Residents should remain alert, secure outdoor items that could become airborne, and report any signs of smoke immediately. With gusty winds continuing into the evening, local officials urge caution and preparedness through Sunday night.
