Ridgely, TN – A minor earthquake shook parts of western Tennessee late Thursday night, raising questions about the region’s seismic activity. The 2.5 magnitude quake occurred just 2 kilometers south-southwest of Ridgely.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 10:41 p.m. with a depth of 9.7 kilometers. Though considered minor, tremors were felt in the surrounding area, with residents near Memphis reporting light shaking.
Despite the earthquake’s modest size, some Tennesseans took to social media, asking, “Did you feel it?” The USGS encourages people who felt the tremors to submit a report on their website, contributing to earthquake research efforts.
Western Tennessee is part of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which has a history of earthquake activity. Although Thursday’s quake caused no damage, it serves as a reminder for residents to stay aware of earthquake preparedness measures.
