Tennessee – A biting northwest wind pushes across the Mississippi River this morning, rattling signs and sweeping cold air through the Memphis metro. Commuters stepping outside feel the chill immediately as gusty winds and freezing temperatures combine across the Mid-South.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. for portions of west Tennessee, north Mississippi, east Arkansas, and southeast Missouri. Northwest winds between 15 and 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph will continue early today before slowly easing through the morning.
Temperatures started the morning near 37°F at Memphis International Airport, but wind chills dipped into the upper 20s as clouds drift across the region.
The cold air remains locked in through the day. High temperatures reach only around 42°F, even as sunshine gradually breaks through by afternoon.
Meteorologists say the greater concern comes after sunset.
A Freeze Warning remains in effect through midday today, followed by another Freeze Warning beginning at 8 p.m. and lasting through late Tuesday morning. Overnight temperatures could fall to around 25°F across Memphis, with even colder readings possible in rural areas of Shelby County.
That kind of cold can damage early spring vegetation and newly planted gardens. Residents should cover sensitive plants and disconnect outdoor hoses before temperatures drop.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 40, Interstate 55, and Interstate 240 should also watch for slick patches on bridges if moisture freezes overnight.
The cold pattern fades quickly. Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs near 47°F, followed by a strong spring rebound midweek.
By Wednesday afternoon, temperatures climb to the low 60s, and warmer air continues building toward late week.
