Memphis, Tennessee – Residents along the Tennessee-Arkansas border are bracing for life-threatening heat as the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Warning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Today’s Heat Advisory is already in effect, with temperatures and humidity combining for heat index values up to 108°, and even hotter conditions—up to 111°—are expected Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the affected region includes much of north Mississippi, hitting communities like Tupelo, Oxford, Amory, and Booneville especially hard. These dangerously high temperatures pose a serious risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for outdoor workers, children, and older adults. Power companies and emergency responders across Tishomingo, Lee, Monroe, and Lafayette counties are preparing for an uptick in emergency calls as the heat intensifies.

Local agencies urge everyone to avoid outdoor activity during peak hours, seek air-conditioned spaces, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in the shade and staying hydrated. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—call 911 immediately if symptoms develop.

The Extreme Heat Warning lasts through 8 p.m. Wednesday, but officials caution that high temperatures may persist through the end of the week. Stay alert for further advisories as the heat wave continues.
