Knoxville, TN – A winter weather advisory is in effect for eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, bringing snow, icy roads, and gusty winds from Friday afternoon through Saturday.

The National Weather Service predicts up to 4 inches of snow in areas above 2,500 feet, with locally higher amounts possible. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility in higher elevations. Residents in affected areas, including Johnson City, TN, and Abingdon, VA, are urged to plan for slippery roads and travel delays, especially during the Friday evening commute.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing Saturday night, increasing the risk of icy patches through Sunday morning. Highways like Interstate 40 and Interstate 81, as well as mountain roadways leading to the Smoky Mountains, could become hazardous.

Motorists are advised to slow down, maintain extra distance between vehicles, and stay updated on road conditions by calling 511. Residents should also be cautious while walking on outdoor surfaces, as stairs, sidewalks, and driveways may become icy and slippery.

The advisory remains in effect through Saturday at 1 p.m. Travelers are encouraged to monitor updates and adjust their plans accordingly.
