Memphis, Tennessee – Flash flooding could threaten parts of the Mississippi Valley on Sunday as slow-moving thunderstorms bring torrential rainfall to Tennessee, Mississippi, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall is in place from northern Mississippi through western Tennessee and into southern Illinois. The heaviest activity is expected from midday through Sunday evening.

Urban areas like Memphis, Jackson, and Tupelo could see poor drainage flooding, while rural areas may contend with fast-rising creeks and roadside washouts. Rain totals may exceed 2 inches in spots, especially where storms repeatedly track over the same region.

Motorists are urged to use caution on I-55, I-40, and U.S. 78, where visibility could drop rapidly during heavy rain. Keep emergency kits ready and charge mobile devices in advance.

While the storm system should move out overnight, more unsettled weather is expected by midweek.
