Danville, IL – Three teenagers were arrested early Tuesday following an alleged alcohol theft and reported battery of a store employee at the Meijer Grocery Store in Danville.

According to the Danville Police Department, officers were called to the 3600 block of N. Vermilion Street shortly after midnight for a retail theft in progress. Police were notified that three individuals, all 18 years old, had allegedly stolen alcohol and that one suspect had allegedly battered an employee before fleeing the scene in a white Toyota Corolla.

Officers quickly located the suspect vehicle in the area of Vermilion Street and Winter Street, where the driver allegedly refused to stop. Police say a brief pursuit ensued, ending when the vehicle struck the stairs in front of the Vermilion County Administration Building on N. Vermilion Street. The three suspects then allegedly attempted to flee on foot, but officers apprehended them nearby.

The teens have been identified as Jeremiah L. Merrick of Bloomington, Andrew T. Du, and Brian N. Chesley Jr, both of Champaign, according to police. During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found the stolen alcohol and a loaded handgun.

All three were booked at the Vermilion County Jail on initial charges of retail theft and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Police say Chesley, the driver, faces additional charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding, while Merrick is also charged with battery for allegedly striking the Meijer employee.

Police remind the public that charges are allegations and all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been released at this time. Anyone with tips is encouraged to contact Danville Police or Vermilion County Crime Stoppers.
