Tampa, FL – A Tampa man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Monday evening following an alleged dispute, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, detectives arrested Maurice Blackmon, 44, at approximately 6:18 p.m. Monday, February 2, after an investigation into a deadly shooting near North Nebraska Avenue and East 129th Avenue. Authorities say the victim, Corey Brown, 34, was shot during an argument and later died from his injuries.
Investigators allege Blackmon shot Brown during the dispute, which escalated into violence in the north Tampa area. Deputies responded to the scene and launched an immediate investigation, leading to Blackmon’s arrest later the same day.
Blackmon is facing a charge of second-degree murder with a firearm resulting in great bodily harm or death, according to jail records. Officials did not immediately release details about what sparked the dispute or whether the individuals knew each other.
“No disagreement should ever lead to violence and the loss of life,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick work of our detectives, this person is off our streets and will be held accountable for their senseless actions.”
The shooting occurred in Hillsborough County, within the Tampa Bay metro area, a region that has seen increased law enforcement focus on gun-related violence. Detectives continue to review evidence and interview witnesses as the case moves forward.
