Tampa, Florida – Relentless summer heat will grip west central Florida today, pushing heat index values to a sweltering 109° and triggering a Heat Advisory for millions from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Residents from Tampa and St. Petersburg to Lakeland and Sarasota can expect dangerous humidity and soaring temperatures that could cause heat-related illnesses if precautions are not taken.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, the advisory covers Sumter, Pinellas, Polk, Hardee, Levy, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Sarasota counties—including both coastal and inland cities. With temperatures and humidity combining for extreme feels-like readings, health risks like heat exhaustion and heat stroke are sharply elevated for outdoor workers, the elderly, and children.

Critical impacts are expected in high-traffic zones like I-275, US-19, and major beach areas, where medical calls and infrastructure strain may spike. Emergency management urges everyone to stay hydrated, remain indoors when possible, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Lightweight, loose clothing and limiting outdoor activities to early morning or after sunset can help reduce risk.

This marks the fifth heat advisory this month for the region—on par with the record-setting summer of 2023. Area schools, parks, and sports leagues may alter schedules due to the severe conditions.

The advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m., with more updates possible as high temperatures persist. Continue monitoring local alerts and take all warnings seriously.
