Tampa, Florida – Life in Tampa and surrounding counties grinds to a near standstill Tuesday as an Extreme Heat Warning brings heat index values up to a staggering 115 degrees through 7 p.m., with a fresh Heat Advisory already set for Wednesday. The National Weather Service warns that residents across Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties face a significant risk for heat illnesses, especially the elderly, young children, and those working outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, the warning remains in place until 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a new advisory running from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Dangerously high heat and humidity will impact cities including St. Petersburg, Tampa, Clearwater, Lakeland, and Zephyrhills. The combination of sweltering temperatures and stifling humidity will drive “feels-like” readings past 110°, creating a life-threatening risk for anyone without access to air conditioning.

Officials urge everyone to stay indoors if possible, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours. Car interiors can become deadly in minutes, and residents are reminded never to leave children or pets unattended. Outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

Emergency services across the region are on high alert. This rare July heat surge is reminiscent of the 2020 Gulf Coast heatwave. Residents should expect possible additional warnings through Wednesday night as oppressive heat lingers.
