Tampa, FL – As Floridians welcome the first week of spring, a high rip current risk is in effect along the Gulf Coast, making swimming conditions dangerous. The National Weather Service has issued a rip current warning through Tuesday morning, impacting beaches in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties.
According to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin Office, the warning remains in place until 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 18. Rip currents can pull even the strongest swimmers away from shore, increasing the risk of drowning. Beachgoers are urged to swim near lifeguards, avoid swimming alone, and never attempt to fight a rip current. If caught, experts advise floating and swimming parallel to shore until free.
Aside from the coastal hazard, the rest of the week looks ideal for outdoor activities. Tuesday will be sunny with highs reaching 78°F, while Wednesday will warm to 81°F with light afternoon winds. The weather stays mild through the end of the week, with highs in the upper 70s and mostly clear skies.
Spring officially begins Thursday, March 20, bringing a stretch of warm and dry conditions. However, beach visitors should remain cautious until rip current risks subside. Stay updated with local forecasts and check beach conditions before heading out.
