Tampa, FL – A dangerous heat wave is set to hit parts of southwest and west-central Florida today, with heat index values expected to reach up to 109°F. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region, warning residents of the risks posed by the extreme temperatures and high humidity.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will be in effect from noon until 6 PM EDT today, impacting areas from Sumter and Polk counties to coastal regions like Pinellas, Manatee, and Lee. With the combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity, outdoor activities could lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Specific cities including Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Fort Myers, as well as other coastal areas like Sarasota and Venice, are expected to feel the intense heat during the peak afternoon hours. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear loose clothing, and avoid strenuous physical activities, especially during midday hours.

For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion. Emergency action is critical for anyone exhibiting signs of heat stroke, and 9-1-1 should be called immediately if such symptoms occur.

The heat advisory is expected to end by 6 PM today, but residents are urged to remain vigilant as further advisories may follow in the coming days if conditions persist.
