Tallahassee, Florida – Fire danger is expected to rise quickly across the Florida Panhandle and surrounding areas within the next 24 hours as dry air and gusty winds move in behind a cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Saturday afternoon across southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia, and much of the Florida Panhandle. Northeast winds between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, will combine with low humidity levels dropping to between 18 and 28 percent.
This setup creates conditions where fires can start easily and spread rapidly, especially in dry grasses and wooded areas. Communities including Tallahassee, Dothan, and Valdosta face an increased risk, particularly during peak afternoon heating.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks, including using equipment or parking vehicles on dry vegetation.
Emergency officials also recommend having a plan in place in case a fire develops nearby.
The fire threat will peak Saturday afternoon into the early evening, with conditions improving slightly after sunset as winds begin to ease. Additional alerts or burn restrictions may be issued if conditions worsen.
