Tallahassee, Florida – Hazardously cold conditions are impacting the Tallahassee area Thursday, with dangerous wind chills this morning and a freeze likely tonight into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect early Thursday for portions of the Florida Panhandle and southwest Georgia, including the Tallahassee region. Forecasters report wind chill values ranging from 18 to 24 degrees this morning, cold enough to pose a risk to people without adequate protection during prolonged exposure.

As winds ease later today, attention shifts to tonight’s freeze potential. The National Weather Service says a hard freeze is likely across much of the region this evening through Friday morning, with low temperatures expected to fall into the low to mid-20s, and pockets of upper teens possible in colder inland locations.

A Freeze Warning has been issued for much of the Florida Panhandle and southwest Georgia, excluding immediate coastal areas. The coldest temperatures are expected during the pre-dawn hours Friday, when exposed pipes, sensitive plants, and outdoor pets are at greatest risk.

Officials urge residents to protect people, pets, pipes, and plants by bringing pets indoors, insulating exposed plumbing, dripping faucets if needed, and covering or bringing in sensitive vegetation. Those without adequate heating should check on neighbors, family members, and the elderly.

These temperatures are well below normal for mid-January and could cause damage where cold protection steps are not taken.

The National Weather Service advises limiting time outdoors this morning, dressing in layers, and monitoring updated forecasts as the freeze event unfolds.

Morning commuters, outdoor workers, and residents across the Tallahassee area should prepare for dangerously cold conditions through Friday morning.
