Tallahassee, FL – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across the Florida Big Bend and Panhandle today, highlighting critical fire weather conditions due to gusty winds and very dry air. The warning will remain in place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, as the combination of strong winds, dry vegetation, and low relative humidity significantly increases the risk of fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service, a cold front that passed through overnight is bringing drier air to the region. Winds will increase to 15-20 mph by early afternoon, with gusts potentially reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 25%, creating conditions conducive to new fire starts and rapid spread. The strongest winds are expected across western Florida’s Big Bend, posing the greatest fire risk in that area.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning during these conditions and to follow fire safety precautions. The NWS recommends creating a 10-foot buffer around campfires and grills, properly extinguishing them, and securing any chains or dragging materials that could spark. Authorities stress that any fires that do start could spread quickly and become difficult to control.
Dry conditions are forecast to persist, with no rain expected over the next week.
