Syracuse, NY – Drivers across Syracuse and Onondaga County are waking up to slippery conditions Monday as lake effect snow continues to fall, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory that remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, additional snowfall totals between 1 and 3 inches are expected before the advisory expires. The higher end of those totals is most likely in the northwestern portion of Onondaga County, where lake effect snow bands are expected to linger longer.

The advisory covers all of Onondaga County, including the City of Syracuse, and is expected to impact the Monday morning commute. Snow-covered and slick roads may develop quickly, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and secondary roads.

Forecasters say snowfall rates will vary through the morning as lake effect bands shift across the region. While overall totals are not expected to be high, even modest snowfall amounts could create hazardous travel conditions during peak commute hours.

Local officials are urging drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and allow extra travel time. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks and parking lots where snow and ice may accumulate.

Motorists can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting their state’s 511 traffic information system before traveling.
