Syracuse, NY – Hazardous travel conditions are expected across Central New York tonight as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday, impacting travel along major corridors including Interstate 81, Interstate 90, and Route 13.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, additional snowfall of up to two inches is expected overnight across Onondaga, Cortland, Tompkins, Seneca, and southern Cayuga counties. While totals remain modest, narrow bands of lake effect snow combined with wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility at times.
Forecasters warn that roads may become slick quickly, especially in areas repeatedly impacted by lake effect snow bands. Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly along I-81 through Syracuse and Cortland, as well as I-90 near Auburn and Seneca Falls, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours.
The advisory remains in effect through 7 a.m. Sunday, when snowfall is expected to taper off and winds gradually ease. Until then, motorists should plan for slippery roads, icy patches, and sudden visibility drops, especially on untreated or rural roadways.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time if travel is necessary overnight. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks, driveways, and stairs, where icy conditions may increase the risk of falls.
Drivers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Even after snowfall ends, lingering blowing snow may continue to affect travel early Sunday morning.
